In October of 1990, Kamagasaki turned in to a "war zone" for nine days. The great "October riot" was started when the local police station was surrounded by 200 laborers demanding an apology (after the chief of the police was arrested for receiving over twenty thousand dollars from the local mafia in return for letting the mafia control the laborers working contracts), and the police responded by calling in 2000 riot police.
